DECA ICDC begins on Wednesday, April 26th – this will be the day for the earlier opening general session. (NOT A SATURDAY START THIS YEAR)
Good afternoon MN DECA Advisors –
See below about the Opening Session in California. I wanted to share this information with you now as it may impact your plans for Saturday. My thoughts are that instead of having our state registration and buffet from 5-7, we will probably have it from 4-6 pm to facilitate the attendance at the 7 pm Opening Session assignment.
I am in Anaheim this week for a National DECA Inc. Board of Directors Meeting and have meetings set up with the various departments of our ICDC Property – Anaheim Marriott Suites. I am anxious to get things started on our ICDC stay.
Have a great week!

Subject: ICDC 2017 Opening Session
Chartered Association Advisors—
Our Grand Opening Session at the DECA International Career Development Conference will be conducted in two sessions as we presented to you in August at the DECA Chartered Association Management Conference.
To best facilitate the opening sessions, we are assigning the attendance by region and will maintain a seating chart. Using 2016 numbers as a guide, the attendance numbers are nearly equal for each session.
Session 1 – 7:00-8:30 p.m.: Central Region and North Atlantic Region
Session 2 – 9:30-11:00 p.m.: Southern Region and Western Region
We all know that this will be a different way of experiencing ICDC, and change can also provide new opportunities and experiences, especially embraced with a supportive, open-mind. As you plan your association meetings, you may wish to consider the timing of your assigned session. For example, those assigned to session 1 may wish to hold their association meetings following the opening session, while those assigned to session 2 may wish to hold their association meetings prior to the opening session. Please work with your assigned hotel or with Shirlee Kyle (if your hotel does not have meeting space so she can help secure space at the convention center or another hotel) by December 31 to schedule your meeting needs.
DECA is committed to ensuring a high-energy, quality production at the same level as our past general sessions. Even with this new format we still be able to create an energetic atmosphere where our members will feel part of a memorable opening session experience like we have in years past. This format also allows the best stewardship of our attendees’ registration fees, because it does not require the necessary double expenses in the areas of production, labor, rigging and facility rental over an extended number of days that would have resulted by setting two general session stages in two side-by-side exhibit halls. Even with one session happening in two side-by-side exhibit halls, members would still be in a room with half of the attendees and an empty stage approximately half of the show.
We will continue to communicate plans and details as we work closely with the Anaheim Convention Center, production company, transportation providers and hotel partners to ensure safety and high-level organization of the event.
The Grand Awards Session will be conducted in the format of our Achievement Awards Session earlier that morning. DECA will ensure ample seating for all members either in the main hall that can accommodate 15,500 attendees or an overflow room.
We appreciate your cooperation and working together to provide the very best experiences for our emerging student leaders.
