DECA Guide Changes

Good morning DECA Advisors!

I want to call special attention to the info in this email – you should have received info such as this as a chapter advisor from the national center.  The events below (guidelines) had some errors in the Hard copy DECA guide that was sent out in August.  Please be certain to download and save these new corrected guidelines if you have students that do any of these events.  DO NOT GO BY THE DECA GUIDE FOR THESE EVENTS.

Thank you!

Subject: CE Update: Updated Event Guidelines

Good evening,

After a slight error in the numbering of the sections, DECA has posted updated event guidelines for the following events.

cmp
eib

flpp
csp
lep
fmp
epp

In most cases, the final roman numeral for the optional appendix was mislabeled. For the Learn and Earn Project and Independent Business Plan, the last two roman numerals were mislabeled.

Please make sure your members download the new guidelines and assign the numbering of the sections accordingly. The individual event guidelines have been updated on deca.org. You may need to refresh your browser and clear the cache. A new version of the complete DECA Guide will be updated soon. Chapter Advisors will also receive an update tomorrow.

SBE Event at State

Just a clarification on the SBE event that we have added to our events offered at the State Conference.  It really is a presentation, not an interview.

Here are the guidelines posted on the DECA Website: http://www.deca.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/hs_sbe_competition_guidelines.pdf

This year’s topic is promotion and how the SBE uses it.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions that we can address!

Have a great week!

MN DECA STATE ONLY COMPETITIVE EVENTS (EVENTS THAT ARE NOT OFFERED AT ICDC)

Last spring the DECA Board finalized the events that MN DECA will be offering this year, the 2016-2017 school year.  I am attaching the MN State Only Guide.  Please take a close look at the summary of events that MN DECA offers – the board decides each spring what events for the coming year.  The Economics In Marketing State Only Event was dropped and will not  be offered.

Attached is a summary of the events that MN DECA will offer at the State Career Development Conference in March 2017.  The national events that are in shaded grey have had changes to the guidelines.  Events in red are not offered by MN DECA.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS ARE ATTACHED

For your convenience the individual events are attached as stand alone documents.  Everything on this email will be posted to our state website for future reference.

DISTRICT ALLOCATIONS FOR ADVANCEMENT TO STATE

The scale for participation in the 2017 State Career Development Conference is based upon the number of participants in your district competition.  This allocation if for any and all events.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

ALLOCATION PER ALL EVENTS

Less than 200 Top 4 per event
201-300 Top 6 per event
301-400 Top 8 per event
401 + Top 10 per event
501+ Top 12 per event

CHAPTER GOLD

The only change made to Chapter Gold is that the top 12 chapters (those that are interviewed at state) will receive 2 spots for the Leadership Academies at ICDC.  Previously the top 8 received 3 spots. The Guidelines for this event within the MN Only Guide have been updated to reflect the changes.

SBE PROJECTS TO HAVE INTERVIEW AT STATE 2017

There will be an interview only at SCDC based upon National gold certification designations.  Top 8 chapters will be recognized at the state conference based upon the interviews. There will not be guidelines for this event as documentation requirements will follow those set forth by National Center.

EMERGING LEADERS SERIES (LEADERSHIP ACADEMIES)

There is always question as to who is eligible to attend the various academies at ICDC.  The only academy that you and/or your students can directly enroll in is the Thrive Academy which is based on your accomplishment in the National Membership Campaign.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR EMERGING LEADERS SLOTS DURING ICDC?

The MN DECA board has reviewed how the academy slots will be allocated and determined the following:

  • 1st -3rd place winners of Skills Evens (State Only) &
  • Top 12 Chapter Awards Projects (2 students per chapter) will receive spots in both academies based upon availability.

Marketing Plan winners will no longer receive allocations beginning in 2017 for ICDC.

Question

Good morning DECA Advisors –

If you have any policies for your local chapter regarding chemical violations – could you please take a moment to share them with Heather Stohs from Chanhassen DECA.  Her email address is below.

Thanks for any examples and help you may be able to send her way!

Subject: Question

Jackie,

Chaska and Chanhassen DECA advisors have been asked to take a look at and possibly rewrite a few of our policies in our Code of Conduct. We are really looking into our chemical violation policy. I’m just curious what other schools have for policies. Do they allow students with violations to compete? Are they disqualified? Or somewhere in the middle?

Let me know if you know of any policies. Jeff Rydland and I will be meeting with our Activities Director tomorrow.
Thanks,

Heather Stohs

Dues

IMPORTANT DECA DUES INFORMATION – SAVE THIS INFORMATION!

DECA utilizes online membership reporting for all of its chartered/state associations.  Attached are directions to print out or see below.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR STATE/NATIONAL DUES THROUGH ONE SITE

DECA’s online membership system offers features for chapter advisors including:

  • Drop-down menus now allow navigation of the system on any page.
  • Invoices are automatically e-mailed to chapter advisors and state/provincial advisors (opting in) so there is no need to download it.
  • New chapters will be approved by DECA and the state/provincial advisor before they are created.

Many of you are anxious to add members to your roster now that school is in session, and our new system will make it easier than before. Instructions are embedded in the system to walk them through the process. Please remember that you need to ensure accuracy of spelling and gender of all members as this system is used for many components. Furthermore, please remember that adding membership continues to be a two step process: the members are added and then they all must be submitted.

To login, simply visit http://www.decaregistration.com/hs and enter your information as requested on the screen. If you were a chapter last year, simply login using your First name space Last name as their username and Last name as their password.

If you forgot what they were, please use the Forgot Username and Password link on the bottom of the login page to have that emailed to you. If your email address has changed, please contact our office at 703-860-5000 and ask for the Data Management Department.

Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your student members, reactivate all advisors, and enter professional and alumni members.

Once each member and advisor registers they will receive a unique four digit number that will be added to the association-chapter number, giving each member a unique 9-digit membership number. These numbers will follow your advisors and students through to our online registration system for our conferences. Members cannot register in the online registration system for conferences unless they are submitted members (e.g. New York Experience, etc). A list of all submitted members will be viewed so they can choose who they want to register for a conference.

Upon submission of your membership you will be emailed a copy of your invoice for proper processing by your accounting department.

If you have any questions about the system, please contact us by calling (703) 860-5000 and asking for the data management department.

PLEASE SHARE WITH INTERESTED DECA  MEMBERS

Attached is the packet with State Officer Candidate Information.

STATE OFFICER ELECTION PROCEDURES

Election of the 2016-2017 State Officers will be held during the Fall Leadership Conference.  Remember to review the packet closely – there will once again be an interview component on site on Sunday afternoon, November 6th.  This interview score will account for 50% of the total process in the election procedures with the ballots cast by voting delegates making up the other 50% in the election process.

Last spring we encouraged candidates to submit an “Early Intent Form” if they would like to get started early on the application process.  We have received several!  If your student submitted this form, they do not need to complete the application form again as it is basically the same form.  Just have them include the previously submitted copy with their other required materials.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATION

Thursday, October 5, 2016

ADDITION TO MATERIALS SUBMITTED

All candidates are to include a portrait stye photo such as graduation picture or school picture with the application materials.  It is also requested that you email an electronic file to the state office as well.

Please let me know if you have questions!
